In many restaurants throughout Italy, handwritten signs alert customers of favorite seasonal dishes that are so popular they will sell out quickly.  Because seasonal menus are the way of life there, when your favorite dish appears on a sign in your local you make a very happy mad dash to get some.  I am a foodie and I think most italians are too……it’s in their nature……so when I see a handwritten sign offering one of my favorites I come to a full stop.  I took this photo a few years ago in Rome and since I love both polenta and baccala (cod) I couldn’t resist…..it drew me right in.

In many small trattorias the only menu is handwritten…in this case on a blackboard…..and displayed outside with the enticing heading:  Oggi si Mangia (Today we eat),  followed by a short list that covers pasta dishes, main courses, and even some dessert advice (dolce consigliato).   I am yearning for these dining experiences again…..not to mention the delicious dishes that are offered.   Time to plan a return visit……
